How Much?

Gary Ashton Posted 22 Nov 2023 - By Gary Ashton

Google is a big company that helps people find information on the internet. Sometimes, when you use a phone or a computer, you can see a box where you can type what you want to find. That box is called a search engine, and Google is one of them. But Google is not the only search engine. There are others, like Bing or DuckDuckGo, that also help people find information.

However, Google wants more people to use its search engine, so it pays some phone and computer makers to make Google the first search engine that people see when they use their devices. For example, Google pays Apple, the company that makes iPhones and iPads, up to $19,000,000,000 (19 billion) a year to make Google the default search engine on Safari, the browser that Apple users use to go online.

Some people think this is not fair, because it makes it harder for other search engines to compete with Google and offer different or better services to people. They also think that Google has too much power over what information people see and how they use the internet. That is why the government of the United States sued Google in 2023, saying that Google broke the law by acting as a “gatekeeper” to the internet and blocking out competitors. This lawsuit is called an antitrust case, because it is about preventing one company from having too much control over a market.

The case is still going on, and Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, has defended his company’s practice of paying Apple and others, saying that it is meant to make the user experience “seamless and easy” and that Google’s search engine is better than the others. The outcome of the case could have a big impact on how people use the internet and what choices they have in the future. unique visitors
